Hi! Thanks for contributing by doing the research and debugging here. Seems the discussion in https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-37861 concluded that this won't be fixed by upstream and I don't think we in Debian want to forever carry a patch that we diverge on from upstream..
