The issue that I see is that the current repo already contains the
upstream history there, and IMO, there is not a strong reasons for
changing it.  Also, IMO, it is useful to have upstream as remote, since
it makes it easier to handle (and backport) patches, running things like
git blame, and so on, but is a personal position.

My *suggestion* is to avoid making that change, but it is you who are
adopting the package.
