this bug is super-old and of course hal is long gone, but I believe the
current equivalent would be to require dbus or, to access inputs (mouse,
keyboard) it probably requires systemd-login or elogind/consolekit2,
depending on the running init.
The systemd service has
After=systemd-user-sessions.service
and the init.d script has
# Required-Start:    dbus
so I believe this bug is fixed and I'm marking as such in slim/1.3.6-0.1
(see #692148)
