I now think I should dump current internal lc.py and call licensecheck as the external backend of debmake. So don't worry about format over d/copyright. While migrating to licensecheck, I will make sure to test it against test data used by lc.py. I know licensecheck marks UNKNOWN for 15 MIT license variant texts extracted from the X.org source.
