This is now fixed upstream with the following commit: https://github.com/viking-gps/viking/commit/7f5933f6380f02be2e8b7b4ee408fe201f69cd7f In the mean time, a workaround is described at https://github.com/viking-gps/viking/issues/339#issuecomment-3341520269 i.e. it is possible to copy the default maps.xml file to ~/.config/viking/maps.xml and update it to use https.
