Yes, I personally have been relying on the PPA package for a while, specifically because my screensaver kept cutting in when I'd play with a game controller (which is most of the time). This is by far the most solid solution I've come across, of the many otherwise hacky options out there.
Sadly I can't sponsor as I've never bothered to become a DD, but I'm looking forward to it getting into Debian officially.
