It would be easier for me to become upstream maintainer of GooCanvas (and thus prevent its removal from Debian) than to port AMIDE (and other packages that used GnomeCanvas) to something else. There is no replacement for the functionality GooCanvas provides. The way upstream GTK/GNOME folks have been constantly redesigning things is extremely disappointing.
