Let me re-iterate on that a bit:If the desired upstream default is indeed to turn this on, then the documentation should be updated accordingly.
That aside, I agree, that diverging from upstream defaults (long term) is a decision that should not be done lightly and only for good reasons.
My suggestion wasn't to keep this reversion indefinitely, but rather for a couple of weeks (months) in unstable, until this has been sorted out.
You indicated a kind of urgency to get xfsprogs into testing, and going that way would be the easiest to achieve that without me pressuring to find a solution quickly.
