This excludes some possible problems on your system, but still doesn't
explain what's going wrong on your box and why it works on most other
systems (according to popcon 270 are using it actively and nobody else
reported this bug).

So still the question: How do you start ding? From shell or from
window manager or the like?

Are you sure, that you are starting /usr/bin/ding (in contrast to some
other program or alias)?

What is your /bin/sh linked to?

Could you please send me the output of
 strace -e open /usr/bin/ding

Maybe this gives me a hint what's going wrong...

Tschoeeee
