Thanks for your patch. However:
 - libieee1284 should build and work on FreeBSD, it is a supported OS
   for the lib;
 - the patch addresses build-time issues and dependencies. What about
   runtime ? In our case, what about hotplug on FreeBSD ?

We'll have to work a bit on the package to get it in a correct shape
for FreeBSD; is there a development machine accessible somewhere ?

One thing we must do, is to determine which backends have been built,
and install only the manpages for these backends. I'll look into that.
