I think I got it now. There were really three parts to your patch
- not ignore sed error, upstream folded that in - alter src/unix/Makefile.in and assign LDFLAGS to new var - alter debian/rules with new var set to zero I am little unclear how 2) and 3) not create 'damage' by dropping linker info. But I guess LDFLAGS is preserved where we need it, and in the little pkgconf stanza for the embedded library we do not need as it already went into making the share library that pkgconfig now points at.
