We can package a more current version of simplesamlphp now that we've overcome the major 1.x -> 2.x hurdle. The current version is 2.5.2, but seeing as the 2.1.8 package is still very fresh, a gradual update process such as simply updating to the latest 2.2.x release may be smoother.
