I can confirm this. At least some other apps seem to be affected - Adobe Reader, for instance. Setting MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO to 1 fixes Firefox. And turning on anti-aliasing (by using the KDE Control Centre which edits $HOME/.fonts.conf) also makes the problem go away for all affected apps. I also noticed another 'fix' for all affected apps - revert libcairo2 to the version in testing, 1.0.4-2. The recent cairo upload might explain why the symptoms only popped up a few days ago.
