Sorry for my silence till now! The reason it was dropped was simply that I couldn't figure out how to make it work with more recent upstream code, and at the time it seemed unused (at least for things packaged in Debian). If you can help figure out how to build the C binding, then that would be much appreciated, and I would love to maintain it as part of the package. Also, if you are interested, you are most welcome to join me in co-maintaining the package.
