On some hosts I noticed that auto-apt-proxy runs into a timeout and never yields a proxy even though there is an apt-cacher-ng on the default gateway. Using htop I saw it recursing into itself through apt-helper. Adding Acquire::http::Proxy-Auto-Detect= in the hit() function fixes this and now it yields a working proxy.
