I would like to make this request official: please bump gcc's baseline
for i386 to be at least i686 + MMX + SSE + SSE2. We already announced
in the Debian 13 release notes that the purpose of the i386 port is to
be run on an x86_64 CPU in a chroot or container, or via multiarch or
multilib. Halfway through the Debian 14 cycle seems like enough of a
grace period before really enforcing this.
Reassigning to gcc-16 since that's now the default.
https://bugs.debian.org/1146393 seems to be an example of a regression
that would have been avoided by a higher baseline.
I'm not going to change that. As a legacy architecture, there's no need
to enable that. There's no legacy software using SSE or SSE2 on i686,
so the x87 math instructions should continue to be the default.
On the contrary, these precision changes are likely to introduce test
regressions for existing packages.
If some other compiler decides that it cannot support that anymore, then
maybe we should stop building that compiler on i386. And start thinking
about how a partial architecture can look like within Debian.
