Hi, Some additional justification that has arisen since this was filed, in case it helps move it along.
setuptools 84.0.0-2 is now in unstable and no longer builds the python3-pkg-resources binary (pkg_resources was removed upstream in setuptools 82.0.0). python3-pkg-resources 80.9.0-2 remains in unstable only as a leftover binary, and setuptools is currently blocked from migrating to testing because of it: removing python3-pkg-resources/80.9.0-2/amd64 from testing makes python3-zc.customdoctests/1.0.1-3/amd64 uninstallable python3-zc.customdoctests is one of exactly four packages holding that migration up, on amd64 and arm64. This one has #1083724 (serious, "(build-)depends on deprecated module python3-pkg-resources") open against it, so it needs either that fix or this removal before forky. Nothing depends on it either way. I checked Depends, Pre-Depends, Recommends, Suggests and Build-Depends across main in both unstable and testing, and there are no reverse relationships at all on any architecture. For completeness, the original grounds still hold: upstream archived the repository on 2020-02-12, the last release on PyPI is 1.0.1 from 2013-02-14, and popcon is 5 installations.
