Hi Mark,

as discussed on IRC:

14:17 werdahias | LeePen: just found out the hard way that mixing
openrc with a newer librc leads to an unbootable system
14:18 werdahias | so maybe that should be a {binary:Version} depends
14:20         werdahias | because it Depends:  librc1t64 (>= 0.63.3), but if
you install 0.64 or greater the system will not boot
14:22 ... Irssi: Join to #debian-init was synced in 376 secs
14:32 navi | are the openrc and librc binaries not being taken
from the same build?
14:32 werdahias | well, the version constraint allows installing a
higher version, maybe that should be a = rather than >=
14:39 hephaistor | if libraries are installed, it is generally assumed
they are compatible until they bump the soname
14:39 hephaistor | if librc has no use other than to support openrc, it
could be moved into the openrc package even (I’ve seen packages do that)
14:39 hephaistor | otherwise it needs a = because partial upgrades are
supported
14:40 navi | i know of a couple more packages that use librc, i
don't know if any of them are in debian
14:39 werdahias | I wanted to eventually package the plymouth plugin
which uses librc
14:41 navi | all other distros ship openrc binaries and librc on
the same package
14:41 navi | maybe i should look into this tbh, even if we can't
fix it, to know going forward
14:41 werdahias | imo the issue is that openrc *must* depend on the
same version of librc, and that can be fixed on the packaging side
14:42 navi | at the moment it's a must
14:43 navi | but i want to make openrc actually 1.0 soon, and by
that point on, semver and soversion should be the actual limitors
14:43 navi | well, "soon" is, about one or two years
14:43 werdahias | that would be very cool

Attached is a patch that facilitates this:

 ...
 Depends: insserv, mount, librc1t64 (= 0.63.3-4),
 ...

best,

werdahias
