Package: src:healpy
Version: 1.19.0-2
Severity: normal

Dear Debian Astro Team,

thank you for maintaining healpy in Debian, the January and February work on the
Cython build and the pytest-cython dependency made the package much healthier.

I am the upstream maintainer of healpy. Upstream released 1.20.0 on 22 July 2026
and 1.20.1 on 3 October 2026, while sid is still at 1.19.0-2, so I
wanted to leave
a tracked request here instead of only announcing the release upstream.

Changes that seem most relevant to Debian:

* NumPy 2.0 ABI. The extensions are now compiled against the NumPy 2.0
ABI and the
minimum supported NumPy is 2.0.0 (upstream PR 1106).
python3-numpy-dev is already
in Build-Depends, so I expect nothing to change, but this is the
item most worth a
  second look.
* Fixed an out-of-bounds read in synalm when l == len(cl), reported upstream and
fixed in PR 1108. It shows up under valgrind in healpy_synalm.
* lonlat2thetaphi(..., latauto=True) no longer modifies the caller's
arrays and now
  accepts read-only input (PR 1123).
* Fixed rotate_alm for complex128 input that is not C-contiguous (issue 702).
* New harmonic_ud_grade function, to change NSIDE through spherical harmonic
transforms without the artefacts of pixel-space ud_grade (PR 1081).
* almxfl is roughly 2 to 3 times faster on large datasets (issue 964).

I checked the build dependencies against sid and I do not believe the
update needs
new ones: libhealpix-cxx-dev 3.83.0-2 satisfies the >= 3.83.0 constraint, and
libsharp 1.0.0-2 and cfitsio 4.7.0-2 are current. pykg-config is still listed in
[build-system] requires upstream, but pybuild does not use PEP 517 isolated
requirements and 1.19.0 already carried the same line, so it should
not matter. The
three patches in debian/patches may need a rediff, most likely the
test tolerance
one for arm64 and ppc64el.

The tarball is
https://github.com/healpy/healpy/releases/download/1.20.1/healpy-1.20.1.tar.gz
and the same file is on PyPI, so d/watch should pick it up.

If it helps, I am glad to prepare the upload myself: import the new
tarball, rediff
the patches, build and run the test suite in a sid container, then
push a branch or
a merge request on salsa for review. I would need someone with upload rights to
sponsor it. Please tell me whether you would like me to do that, or whether you
would rather handle the bump yourselves.

Thanks again,
Andrea Zonca
