Hi John, Sophie and the Security Tools team,

Thanks for the pointer, John. I've used Kali's binwalk3 packaging as a
reference for a Debian draft of upstream 3.1.0 in the Rust team's
debcargo-conf:
https://salsa.debian.org/dfukui/debcargo-conf/-/tree/binwalk3?ref_type=heads

Like Kali's, it builds librust-binwalk-dev and binwalk3 and installs
the command as /usr/bin/binwalk3. It also relaxes dependencies to the
versions in unstable, fixes two doctests that need a host file, and
excludes scripts/binwalk-ui. It builds in sbuild and passes autopkgtest on
amd64.

Sophie, would you review it or join as co-uploader? I'd also like to
understand why Kali depends on sasquatch (not in Debian) and limits
binwalk3 to amd64/arm64.

Security Tools team, I'd appreciate your view on:

1. Coexistence: binwalk3 as a new package and command, leaving binwalk
and python3-binwalk unchanged. Any conflicts I should handle?
2. Maintenance: the Rust packages stay with the Rust team, and I
coordinate with you on coexistence and any later migration.
Does this arrangement fit the team's expectations?
3. Long term: binwalk 2.x is EOL (#1107530), so I'd aim to retire it
once binwalk3 has matured. Does the team agree with this direction?

Thanks,
