Dropping those hardcoded flags in Debian makes blhc [1] complain:

LDFLAGS missing (-fPIE -pie): gcc -o src/reglookup -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now
src/reglookup.o -Llib -L/usr/lib -lm -lpthread -lregfi -ltalloc
LDFLAGS missing (-fPIE -pie): gcc -o src/reglookup-recover -Wl,-z,relro
-Wl,-z,now src/reglookup-recover.o -Llib -L/usr/lib -lm -lpthread -lregfi
-ltalloc

So far I haven't found a way to specify those flags vendor-dependent.
For unknown reasons it does not work modifying LDFLAGS in debian/rules,
while it works well for CFLAGS [2].

Any suggestions?

Sven
