I don't think this is it, since googleearth includes it's own libtiff, but 
I'll look at it when I get a chance.

Sorry you're having trouble. You can always try to contact Google on their 
earth.google.com site; I have no idea how good their support is (or if it 
even exists). I'd be happy to fix this in googleearth-package if someone 
finds a bug and/or a workaround, but there is no way I'm going to be able 
to debug it myself with a closed source app. =(
