I have no idea, and I don't really care, frankly. See planet.debian.org for a
post recently on making DRI configuration less cumbersome. I don't think dri
is active on all my machines, yet rgl seems to work fine.

Rgl works for what it was designed for. If you need extensions, may I suggest
that you talk directly to its (friendly) author?  There is little value I can
add here.
