I do: Settings -> Encoding -> unicode (utf8) LC_ALL=ro_RO.UTF-8 LANG=ro_RO.UTF-8 vi debian/po/ro.po :set encoding=utf-8 And I see a ยบ (I have no idea if that will render - it is a smallish circle above the midline). I'm not sure what's going wrong for you. I have been assuming that that's what I'm supposed to see, but maybe I'm wrong. Certainly the rest of the file contains none of the usual broken encoding type characters ([34m, e.g.).
