i'm sorry, but i'm unable to reproduce this bug.

i tested curl 7.13.1/unstable on both i386 and sparc and 7.13.0/sarge
on i386 and it always downloaded pages successfully.

which is the ouput of "ldd `which curl`"?

i'd say you've got a somewhat miscompiled binary package. where did
you download it?
