Strange, I recently heard several reports about this phenomenon, but I
cannot reproduce it.

Mixing a system should be fine in general. Usually versioned
dependencies should make sure that the system is in a consitent state.

This might be the reason. You need postgresql-client-common installed.
Actually p-common Depends: on p-client-common, but the preinst already
uses a file shipped by p-client-common.

To verify, can you please apt-get install postgresql-client-common and
then try again?
