I have issued the following command:

create_compressed_fs -m -v -L -1 -B 65536 - -

As a result, I get

ERROR:
Unknown input data size and no tempdata storage strategy has been
choosen.
One of: -s, -m, -f or -r required. Exiting...

Clearly, I *have* issued "-m". So that message is less helpful than it
could be. The manual page does not really tell me what is wrong about my
option usage, either. (I understand that -m is no longer recommended, but
the docs do not tell me that it has been outright disallowed.)
