severity 379628 grave
thanks

Hello again,

I'm afraid I have to upgrade this bug back to grave...
I've further researched and tested the resize problem and I've come to the
conclusion that there are two issues:
1) the change in the start partition by libparted, now detailed in
   http://bugs.debian.org/380226;
2) some kind of corruption inside the NTFS partition, probably by
ntfsresize even if the 1st issue is avoided.

I'll explain the 2nd issue in more detail below.

I've reinstalled Windows Vista Beta 2 into a 20 GB partition (first
partition of the disk), same as I did in my earlier attempts.

I reinstalled grub to the MBR and afterwards checked that Vista still
booted OK.

Then I have resized the partition from an installed Debian unstable system
(i.e. not from Debian Installer).
- ntfsresize -i /dev/sda1
- ntfsresize -s 9G /dev/sda1 # Shrink the partition to 9GB
- ntfsresize -i -f /dev/sda1
- Use fdisk in "sector" mode to resize the partition to ~10GB.
Old start/end sectors: 2048 - 40964095; type NTFS, boot flag set
New start/end sectors: 2048 - 20482047; type NTFS, boot flag set
- Reboot the system to let Linux know the new partition table
- ntfsresize -i -f /dev/sda1
- ntfsresize -f /dev/sda1 # Grow the partition to the size of the
                                # physical partition (~ 10GB)
- ntfsresize -i -f /dev/sda1

All ntfsresize commands were completely successful.

Next I tried to reboot into Vista:
- The initial stage of the boot is OK: I get the first graphical screen
with a little endlessly moving "progress" bar and the copyright info
  below it.
- After a little while there is no disk activity anymore and the system
no longer responds to anything (not even ctrl-alt-del); the "progress"
  bar keeps on moving though.

After a cold reset, I boot Vista again and get the option to select "Safe
mode with command prompt" (from which I conclude that Vista must have
registered the previous attempt as failed):
- I get a text screen with "Loading windows files" at the top as title
and "Please wait..." at the bottom as status.
- I see a fair number of files being loaded, but at some point that just
stops and the system is frozen again. The last files that have been
  loaded are:
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\Drivers\Mup.sys
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\ecache.sys
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\DRIVERS\fevol.sys
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\Drivers\disk.sys
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\CLASSPNP.sys
     Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

Note the changing case of the "drivers" directory, but that could just be
how they are listed somewhere.

I think that the problem in both boots is exactly the same. It is just
that with the safe boot what happens is more visible.

Cheers,
Frans Pop
