There is not much one can do about it ... to change directory you can
either press '/' or Ctrl-L as I found out.

Nevertheless, this is the new gtk filechooser for OPEN
... I have talked in IRC and found this has maybe been
improved a bit in GTK+ CVS ... so maybe we will get a cure at some
point .... if you want I can reassign this bug to gtk+ ... otherwise I
would suggest to close this bug as it is not a thunderbird problem
other than the choice to use GTK+ for filechooser.
