Huh, what do you mean? Libvolume_id does not translate anything. What piece of software is showing a label with lowercase chars? Anyway, care to add the output of: /lib/udev/vol_id /dev/sdd1 and: strace -t -s10000 /lib/udev/vol_id /dev/sdd1 so we can take a look at the label stored on your disk.
