I got filesystem errors in a current etch system and tried to fix it in a woody system. fsck complained that it is to old, that's why I installed e2fsck-static from etch in my woody system. The problem I noticed is a useless dependence on e2fsprogs which exists probably only to provide documentation. Since I doubt that I'm able to install e2fsprogs without updating my whole system I droped e2fsprogs and it seems to work well. (OK, it's probably hopeless to rescue my filesystem but this should be unrelated.) So I suggest you remove the e2fsprogs dependency.
