Hi I am using the latest sid nvidia-legacy packages with kernel 2.6.16-2-686 and 2.6.16-2-486 in etch. I am not using module assistant, instead I built using Method #1 in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-legacy-source/README.Debian
Possible that the module-assistant method is broken, it's also possible that the differences between 2.6.16-1-k7 and 2.6.16-2-686 are sufficent to break the package. Could you please test build the modules using Method #1 in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-legacy-source/README.Debian. If that fails, it might also be worth testing with the debian 2.6.16-2-k7 kernel to see if the differences between 2.6.16-1 and 2.6.16-2 are significant.
