Sorry, it must be something with my spam filter or the mail server.
I did not receive any of the follow-up mails, and thus I didn't test
the patches that you and others very helpfully provided.
I can confirm that tls_force_sslv3 with msmtp 1.4.7-2 does the trick.

I will also try to point out this bug to the developers of the SMTP
server. As far as I understand, the piece of software is under active
development (and beta testing).
