Well, for starters, I did not find the information in README.Debian.
I suppose this is what I should have seen:

  - If no XAPPLRESDIR is set, urxvt will read system-wide resources
    from /etc/X11/app-defaults.

  - These resources set a default non-Xft font.

First, this did not ring a bell, and then *default* kinda implies
that it's not used unless another is specified.

Why don't you set the default font in the Rxvt namespace?
