Did you keep in mind to configure an authentication backend for the
authdaemon?

Yes, it's not maildrop which is missing but the authdaemon's socket
which maildrop tries to connect to. I'm somewhat sure that your
authdaemon isn't running. If it is running a file
/var/run/courier/authdaemon/socket should exist.
