# Reassigning this bug - see below reassign 387561 libffi4-dev retitle 387561 libffi4-dev: Please also conflict with old libffi package severity 387561 wishlist thanks
Hello, Out of curiosity, I checked the Packages.gz files on ftp.debian.org for i386 as far back as potato and I was unable to find any trace of a libffi binary or source package. I finally found it looking at http://ftp-master.debian.org/removals.txt > ========================================================================= > [Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 12:39:52 -0400] [ftpmaster: James Troup] > Removed the following packages from unstable: > > libffi | 1.20-4 | alpha, i386, m68k, powerpc > > ------------------- Reason ------------------- > [rene] NBS; soname bumped to 1. > ---------------------------------------------- > ========================================================================= Presumably this means the binary package name changed from libffi to libffi1, a theory supported by the mail to debian-devel-changes here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-changes/2001/04/msg01809.html It looks like the basic issue is that libffi4-dev needs to Conflict against libffi, which for some odd reason (against Debian Policy) shipped a file in /usr/include. So I'm reassigning this bug to libffi4-dev maintainers and asking them to have it conflict against libffi. However... ...note that 2001 was before the release of woody. This package is so old that it shouldn't still be on anyone's system and Debian doesn't actually need to support it. (The submitter may want to check for "Obsolete and locally created packages" in aptitude once in a while.) I'm guessing libffi4-dev maintainers will just close this bug. regards, -- Kevin B.
