Package: srcinst
Version: 0.8.5
Followup-For: Bug #379783

Hello,

It appears that apt-get or aptitude can give some useful information
about virtual packages which srcinst could use.

# LANG=C aptitude show libcairo-dev
No current or candidate version found for libcairo-dev
Package: libcairo-dev
State: not a real package
Provided by: libcairo2-dev
# [ $? -eq 0 ] && echo ok!
ok!
# LANG=C apt-cache showpkg libcairo-dev
Package: libcairo-dev
Versions:

Reverse Depends:
  libcairo2-dev,libcairo-dev
Dependencies:
Provides:
Reverse Provides:
libcairo2-dev 1.2.4-1
# [ $? -eq 0 ] && echo ok!
ok!

... as a bonus, they don't generate an error if the package is virtual
;-)

The bad news is that either srcinst will depend on apt{,itude} or it
will recomend one of them and will take care not to call them, if not
installed.
