Please show the output of "ls -al" in the directory in which you are trying to create the file, and in /tmp.
In ~/Desktop I've Got : total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 angelo angelo 4096 2006-10-03 21:37 . drwxr-xr-x 41 angelo angelo 4096 2006-10-03 21:33 ..

Yes, I need to be root to create files in my home directory with Nautilus but Firefox (for example) can create files (in my home directory) without problem.
