My suggestion is about readline's i-search and reverse-isearch. Currently, when you type a letter that is not found, you hear a beep and isearch seems to start ignoring everything you type. But: 1. Not all people will be set up to hear the beep. For example, you may have no PC speaker(s), or your X terminal emulator may have beeps disabled. 2. You can't tell how many times to backspace, since the not-found letters aren't shown onscreen. It would be great if readline's isearch worked more like emacs, or if there was an input option to make it so. This would mean: 1. when an isearch failed, you would hear a single beep, and the prompt would change to "Failing i-search:" 2. all letters you typed would show up normally, though they would have no effect until you backspaced them.
