I had the same error while upgrading from 2.61 to 2.68 I tracked it, and thought ucf in the postinst was the only command that could produce such an error. Then I ran the ucf command line in a terminal. I didn't get the error. After that, I never got the error again, even when purging, installing sarge version and upgrading, and other tries to reproduce it.
