Hi, I played with this a bit more and I found how exactly to reproduce this bug. If you start wxmaxima when there is a _default_ .wxMaxima present in your home directory, you won't be able to run maxima from wxmaxima any more. If .wxMaxima sits (for example) empty in your home dir, everything will work fine. I reproduced this behavior on two different machines.
The solution is to remove the default .wxMaxima file from your home directory and then restart wxmaxima. This is obviously incredibly annoying.Funny thing, there is nothing suspicious in the default .wxMaxima file (see attachment). Thanks for your help, Slaven
