Hi!
Much like ifupdown may currently handle more than a single DHCP
implementation, ifupdown should also support more than a single
IPV4LL/APIPA (aka "Zeroconf") implementation. Currently in Debian we
have these implementations:
avahi-autoipd
zcip
zeroconf
I would suggest using avahi-autoipd as first choice, then zeroconf,
and finally zcip. Why? Because avahi-autoipd is clearly the most
powerful one and "zeroconf" is second.
Since avahi-autoipd installs itself by default as plugin for
dhcp3-client to be used as fallback if DHCP is not available, I would
suggest adding "ipv4ll" as method for configuration, and not activate
it from ifupdown if dhcp was configured. (like the original bug
reporter suggested).
Oh, and please make sure *not* to name the method "zeroconf". Please
use the name "ipv4ll". "Zeroconf" is actually the name for a set of
technologies, and IPv4ll is only one of them. (The others being mDNS
and DNS-SD).
Thanks,
Lennart (who might be a little biased, since he's upstream of
avahi-autoipd)
