To get links to open using the browser you prefer, use # update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
and select your desired browser from the list. To get Firefox to actually use your mailto: preference, use # cat /usr/share/doc/icedove/firefox.js.tmpl >> /etc/firefox/pref/firefox.js While the gconf toolset does record my preferences, I haven't managed to persuade Icedove to honor them.
