By putting the following in my ~/.fonts.conf 'courier' is now matched by Courier New:
<alias>
<family>Courier</family>
<prefer>
<family>Courier New</family>
</prefer>
<default>
<family>monospace</family>
</default>
</alias>
I think this should be in the default configuration so that users get
the expected font rather than the blurry and badly-drawn Nimbus Mono.
