I forgot one - probably important - detail: my panel is set up to disappear automatically.
I noticed that the "noise" around the gear changes according to the contents of the window that was over the animated icon when the animation started: the reason for the black "noise" that you could see in the screenshot I sent is _probably_ that the panel - and therefore the tray - was hidden when the animation started.
