Hmmm - let me take back my previous comment about interactive performance being OK again on a 32MB box.
I had edited /var/lib/dpkg/available on my box to remove all lines starting with a space - i.e., in practice, the multiline package descriptions. With *that* change plus my ncurses patch, dselect was useable. With my ncurses patch alone, dselect still just takes too much memory.
