I had not, indeed I hadn't even remembered that there was one. I somehow overlooked the instructions in README.Debian, sorry. The firmware blob is the same as before, but the shared lib is apparently different. (It would be great if sane somehow reported that shared lib not to be present, or to be unloadable, etc.) Apparently it works now, sorry for the fuss & thanks for the help.
