Although I agree that this looks like an arts problem, I am baffled
since I have here a GNOME desktop, now a KDE one. This, IMHO, indicates
a broken default value for at least one of the installed packages.

To be honest, I was expecting gxine to be an interface for GNOME, and
not at all for KDE, this judging from the package short description.

"the xine video player, GTK+/Gnome user interface"

Note that, as mentioned earlier, this installation is a default desktop
installation, only some packages were added "by hand" via aptitude the
rest were updated via update-manager since I am trying to test a
"default desktop install" for Etch in order to evaluate the maintaiance
effort for a newbie user.
