I'm sorry.  As I said before, this feature brings too much trouble for me as
it doesn't work properly (some utils, like sbuild, fail to parse virtual
dependencies at all).

The only problem I see with using type-handling as a script for control file
generation is that it doesn't work with Depends: on binary-indep packages.
This is, however, simply a dessign bug in dpkg, and not so hard to fix.

If you (or anyone) either:

  - Fix sbuild and whatever is unable to parse virtual provides properly.
  - Discuss this problem with the dpkg maintainers and conclude that the
    proposed change cannot be implemented.

I'll bring back the provides.

This will be addressed in the long-term, by merging type-handling functionality
in dpkg itself.  I don't expect this to happen anytime soon, though.

I'm leaving this bug open as a reminder that some work needs to be done.
