Accusations of making false statements is not something that I take
lightly..

No, you are wrong. Probably you just have high definition content or a
crappy graphics card or you fumbled your MPlayer compilation. Are you
using MPlayer at all?

Obviously this depends on the testing material's resolution and
complexity ver much, but low and medium resolution samples can play
fine on hardware of that class.

I'll be more specific, the following samples play flawlessly:

352x240:
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/h264/Aladin.mpg

704x352:
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/h264/hbc9.avi

704x288:
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/V-codecs/h264/x264.avi

The following takes the hardware to its limits, A/V synchronisation is
lost during the end where there is a lot of action. A PIII 600 with SSE
optimizations or an Athlon 600 should be able to cope, though:

640x352:

This one is beyond the capabilities of the hardware. You can watch it
with '-lavdopts skiploopfilter=nonkey' at degraded quality, though. I
expect a machine in the 800-900 MHz range to be able to manage.
